Frequently Asked Questions
OSHA requires double hearing protection in situations where extremely high levels of noise cannot be reduced below OSHA’s permissible exposure limits with single hearing protection. While OSHA does not have a specific noise level at which double protection is required, it is often used when the noise exposure exceeds 100 dB, and particularly when workers are exposed to noise levels at or above 105 dB, as extra precautionary measures to ensure the safety and health of employees.
